Proceedings of 2nd Session of a Court Martial on the Coup Attempt Against the King of Jordan, 30 July 1957
Printed in Arabic, this archival item documents the proceedings of the 2nd session of the Court Martial on the coup attempt against the King of Jordan which was held on Tuesday, 30 July 1957 at the King Abdullah II Air Base, in the presence of Colonel “Abed el-Karim al-Barghouti” and Colonel “Ahmad Baslan” along with “Taher Ashihabi and “Adnan Biyoun”, together, they did the secretary related work. The Defense Committee included the following attorneys; Anwar Nusseibeh, Fuad Abd el-Hadi, Hasan Habib Hawwa and Azziz Shihadeh; whereas the session was inaugurated by the Chief Colonel Major “Aukash Azzain” who addressed a question to the witnesses standing before him and they are Major General “Muhammad al-Mayytah”, “Maen Abu Nowwar”, “Naywf al-Hadid”, “Turki el-Hindawi and “Karim Aqleh” and others; each was asked wither they were guilty or not, however, they all denied. Once again, Chief Colonel Major “Aukash Azzain” called for the Representative of the General Prosecution; Colonel “Muhammad Assadi” in his capacity as a representative who, on his behalf, invited the witness; the Second Lieutenant “Halil Salameh” Leader of the First Company at the 1st Brigade of the Armored Vehicles to present himself before the court; where he was asked to deliver his name, age, military rank and his familiarity of the suspects and wither they are close or enemies in addition to the type of his weapon, furthermore, he answered a question related to the day of the attempted coup on 13 April 1957, saying that the unites were involved with the 3rd Brigade and members of the artillery; as the two parties were involved in a shooting, afterwards the witness narrated the rest of the details to which and said that “Natheer Rasheed” spoke to them about the king; where, he described the king’s policy as unwanted in addition to a confirmation of his delivered during a meeting held on 11 April 1957 that they would round up the palace and expel the king, however, if they couldn’t do so, they would shoot him and they were faced by any of the president’s guards they would shoot from a 6-pounder gun. The rest of the testimony was continued until the session was resumed.
